Just recently, the Nigerian Port Authority learned a lesson from it and announced that it would take measures to alleviate the problem of port congestion in the country.


Waste containers piled up in Nigeria are increasing rapidly, causing serious port congestion. The port authority took prompt action to deal with it.


According to the data released by the port authority, there are nearly 5000 abandoned containers that have not been picked up.

Bello Koko, head of the port authority, asked port operators to auction these unclaimed containers. At the same time, we are thinking of other solutions.


It said that these containers for auction were abandoned containers left in the port for more than 90 days, some even more than a year. They call it "overtime" containers, and customs can seize these goods.


Some experts say that the 5000 containers have exceeded the specified 90 days, and they occupy the available space of other containers imported into the country. This affects the efficiency of domestic goods circulation.


Bello Koko urged port operators to auction these abandoned containers to avoid increasing port congestion. It is understood that the Customs has not launched an auction recently, so there is no space to accommodate more containers.


A local freight forwarder said that the consignee did not take delivery, which not only damaged the interests of the carrier, but also occupied the most valuable port space. This brings certain pressure to port management in peak season.
