The global freight demand is still declining, especially the volume of goods from China, which has declined significantly. The data of Descartes Systems in Canada pointed out that: as the sudden decrease in cargo volume continued to affect the West Coast of the United States, the volume of container imports in the United States in October fell again compared with a year ago.
Data shows that in October, the volume of container imports in the United States fell by 13% year on year, only 222,0331 TEU. However, this figure is still 7.2% higher than the pre epidemic level.
On the other hand, in October, the containers imported from China by the United States fell seriously, with only 775,258TEU imported, a 5.5% month on month decrease, 22.8% lower than the peak in August.
At present, China accounts for 34.9% of the total container imports of the United States, lower than 41.5% in February 2022. This has a great impact on the cargo volume of the West Coast ports of the United States.
Besides, the share of ports on the east coast of the United States and the Gulf of Mexico is expanding. According to data, the share of ports on the west coast of the United States dropped from 37% to 36.4%, while that on the east coast was basically flat.
With the transfer of goods from west to east, NY/NZ Port has become the largest import port in the United States for three consecutive months. In October, the port imported 400,663TEU; LA Port imported 329,785TEU, ranking the second; LB Port imported 300,914TEU, ranking third.
However, due to the improvement of the ports in Los Angeles and Long Beach, the port delay in October has improved compared with that in September. In October, the delay of all major ports along the east coast and the Gulf of Mexico has improved, but the delay is still more serious than that of the west coast.
The report emphasizes that although the congestion situation has improved, the instability of the labor force on the west coast may continue to prevent the transfer of freight volume back to the main ports on the west coast.
Descartes said that the logistics indicators they are tracking show that the pressure on the global supply chain has eased, but the global supply chain will still face congestion and different challenges in the remaining months of 2022.
