It is understood that the port of Los Angeles, one of the largest container ports in the United States, said that its import volume did not decrease in July, with a throughput of 935345 TEUs in July, 2.5% higher than the record high in 2019.
However, Wal Mart, a large retailer, said a few days ago that it had cancelled orders of billions of dollars to help keep the inventory level in line with the expected demand.
Target also disclosed that it had cancelled orders of more than $1.5 billion and that it had shipped most of the returned goods in advance.
Nevertheless, US import activity remained close to an all-time high. However, the unprecedented throughput of the port is not enough to clear the container volume of ships waiting in line for berthing.
Gene Seroka, executive director of the port of Los Angeles, said that the port of Los Angeles performed well in July. Although the port is now facing a railway crisis, the overall operation of the port is smoother than last year.
According to relevant data, the total import volume in July was 485472 TEUs, up 3% year-on-year and 9% month on month.
Meanwhile, the port of Auckland on the Pacific coast of the United States also said on the 17th that it handled 116898 containers in July, with a year-on-year drop of 28% in container throughput.
According to the latest data released by Descartes datamyne, an American research company, the total volume of imported containers handled by the United States in July was 2.53 million TEU, an increase of 3% year on year.
It also said that imports from China rebounded last month. In July, the total volume of containers from China was 994927teu, with a year-on-year increase of 6.3%.
In mid August, the import volume of the United States continued to remain strong. So far, the US customs data show that compared with July, the import volume in August has hardly decreased, although some ports may fall slightly.
Gene seroka, executive director of the port of Los Angeles, predicted that the import volume of Los Angeles in August might ease.
It also pointed out that the railway problem is also very serious now. The congestion crisis of inland railway is the same as that of last year's port, and the container backlog is caused by the untimely delivery.
Descartes previously said that since March 2021, the monthly import volume of the United States has continued to exceed 2.4 million TEU, and port congestion has become a major problem.
As long as the monthly container import volume of US ports exceeds 2.4 million TEU, the port congestion will continue until the infrastructure is changed.
Some experts pointed out that in order to cope with this growth, we need more than marginal improvement of capacity.
Among other things, new container terminals and even new container ports will be needed in the next decade to effectively handle container traffic.
