As we all know, Port Klang is the largest container port in Malaysia. Last year, it was the 12th busiest container port in the world, handling a record 13.67 million TEU goods.

It is reported that from May 1, the Ministry of transport of Malaysia has set a three-day deadline for all imported container goods to leave the storage yard of Port Klang - from the date of entry to customs clearance. Wee Ka Siong, Minister of transport, said that this would improve the efficiency of the port of Klang and prevent containers from piling up in the yard.

This is a new standard operating procedure (SOP), which includes the detention, inspection and release of containers by law enforcement agencies and other government agencies or port authorities at Klang port.

Wee Ka Siong said that according to this standard operating process, it takes only one day to process a container until it is released for delivery.

"On the first day after the arrival of the goods, the customs officer will inspect the goods, review the inspection on the second day, and complete the customs clearance on the third day."

"If the documents are complete and the information reviewed by the authorities is true, a container can be cleared in only three days. However, if the documents cause customs suspicion, there will be three to 30 days for investigation."

Wee Ka Siong explained that during this period, if port operators find wrong declaration of goods or false tax declaration, they can take action against the perpetrators.

If the authorities want to take the case to court, the containers will be moved to the designated area so that the container yard can be cleaned and congestion can be avoided.

"In the past, the government has never set a time limit for customs inspection for imported containers, resulting in some containers being stored in the yard for up to five years without any importers coming to claim them."

Wee Ka Siong also said that in order to speed up customs clearance, shipping companies must also cooperate and submit all necessary documents. "If this measure is successfully implemented in Klang port, we will implement the same measure in other ports in Malaysia," he said

Obviously, the ultimate goal of this measure is to reduce business costs and ensure timely delivery by allowing rapid customs clearance of goods.

GLA Family would like to remind the majority of cargo owners and freight forwarders that if there are goods destined for Klang port, they need to pay attention to the latest port news to avoid delayed delivery of goods.
