It is understood that LB port announced on its official website that the port authority will continue to postpone the container dwell fee, and the fee will not be considered before December 13.

Since the announcement of the charging policy on October 25, the number of stranded containers at the two ports has decreased by 37%.

However, the congestion of Los Angeles port has not been improved, and there are still a large number of ships waiting outside the port. This means that shipping companies will increase operating costs.

However, some shipping companies thought of NY / NJ port thousands of miles away from LA / lb port. Unlike LA / lb ports, NY / NJ is under the joint jurisdiction of a port authority.

There are five main container terminals in these two ports:

PNCT (mainly used by Maersk)

Maher (the largest wharf, used by CMA CGM / one / COSCO / Hapag Lloyd / Zim and other shipping companies)

APM terminals Elizabeth (Maersk's Wharf, mainly 2m in use)

GCT Bayonne and GCT New York (mainly used by Wanhai and MSC)

In general, the biggest difference between NY / NJ port and LA / lb port is to charge bridge tolls. Since GCT New York is located on Staten Island, if you want to enter the terminal, you must pay bridge tolls.

At present, many shipping companies see business opportunities due to the tight maritime supply chain, lack of long-term shipping space and high sea freight.

Although NY / NJ port also has port congestion, it is still not so serious compared with LA / lb port.

Moreover, compared with conventional shipping companies, the new shipping company will face higher berthing costs and longer waiting time in LA / lb port.

It is reported that at present, BAL container line, an oil tanker company in Saudi Arabia and Vasi shipping in Singapore are known to have been attached to NY / NJ wharf.

NY / NJ terminal has mainly focused on dealing with the overtime ships of existing shipping companies. By October this year, a total of 110 overtime ships were attached to NY / NJ terminal.

In addition to overtime ships, existing shipping companies have also opened additional routes. Maher wharf has taken three new routes: Vietnam China East America route of OOCL, indamex2 route of Hapag and Mediterranean express line of Zim.

It is reported that MSC plans to move its self operated route Santana to the east coast of the United States and connect with GCT New York Wharf in early 2022.

GCT New York also took the aa7 East US Route newly opened by Wanhai this year.
